Occupying a naturally defensive site on a promontoryon the isle of Rousay, the Midhowe Broch was built and inhabited between 200 B.C. and 200 A.D.
Like the Broch of Gurness across Eynhallow Sound on the Mainland, Midhowe is surrounded by a group of dwellings.
Thirty feet in diameter, the broch walls, approximately 15 feet thick, today stand at roughly 14 feet but were probably 2-3 times higher. Large flagstones divide the interior space into working, storage, and living areas.
