Stones

In 1993, a storm cut away the dunes on the east side of Bostadh Beach at the north end of the island of Great Bernera to reveal series of stone structures.

Later excavation revealed the remains of a Norse settlement. Underneath the Norse settlement, however, were five Pictish houses believed to be from ca.500 A.D.

After excavation, the houses were recovered to protect them, and a replica of a Pictish house -- called a "jelly baby" because of its configuration -- has been built for visitors.
