 St David's (Welsh: Tyddewi) is the smallest city in the United Kingdom. Built around St. David's Cathedral, which was built in the 12th-13th Centuries on the site of St. David's original monastery and an earlier cathedral, it lies on the River Alun on Saint David's peninsula in Pembrokeshire, Wales. Next to the Cathedral lie the ruins of the 14th Century Bishop's Palace.
Saint David was born to Saint Non c.500 A.D. at what is now St Non's Well, a ten minute walk south of the city. After studying with St. Paulinas at Whitland and St. Illtud at Llantwit Major, St. David founded his monastery at Vallis Rosina (Glyn Rhosyn in Welsh) c.550 A.D. Known for his strict monastic rules, St. David is the patron saint of Wales. He founded numerous monastic settlements and churches in Wales, Cornwall, and Brittany. Legend says that two pilgrimages to St David's are equal to a pilgrimage to the Vatican in Rome.
