Moone was christianised by the Roman Bishop Palladius, so, legend has it, when St. Patrick planned to visit the town the residents of Moone laid traps for him, considering him to be heretic. Patrick was warned however, and he skirted the town and cursed Moone, saying no more men born there would ever become king or bishop. And, there never has been a bishop from Moone.

It is claimed that, in the 6th Century, St. Colmcille (Columba) founded a monastery in Moone, but modern scholarship now claims that a monastery was founded much later here.

Moone's most famous attribute is its 8th Century High Cross, located in the remains of a 13th Century church at the site of the early monastery.

Moone is one of the oldest inhabited areas in County Kildare with evidence of settlement going back 6000 years.
