St. Moluag founded a monastery called Kilmoluaig on the island of Lismore in 562 A.D. It was a major center of Christianity in Scotland. To modern eyes it seems an isolated location for such a center, but in an era when the fastest and most reliable transport was by water, Lismore was ideally situated. St. Moluag was known for evangelizing the Picts of Scotland in the 6th Century A.D.
The story about the monastery's founding tells of St. Moluag and his comteporary St. Mulhac vying to be the first to set foot on Lismore. A race ensued, but when St. Moluag found that he was losing, he cut off his finger and threw it onto the island and therefore won the right to establish a church on the isle. He died in 592 A.D.
