Founded in Stirling in Scotland in 1129 A.D., the name Church of the Holy Rude was first given to a church that stood on this site in the 1130s. "Holy Rude" means Holy Cross, giving it the same origin as Holyrood in Edinburgh. Nothing of this early structure now remains due to a fire in 1405.

Further construction occured in the following centuries was completed around 1530 which was when the west tower was also extended to its current height. The church has a historic churchyard lying primarily to the west and northwest of the church.

Its close proximity to Stirling Castle led the church to its almost unique place in history. On July 29, 1567, the infant James VI was crowned King of Scotland in Holy Rude following the forced abdication of his mother, Mary Queen of Scots.
