For over 12 centuries, a church has stood at this site in the heart of Bath: an Anglo-Saxon Abbey Church dating from 757, pulled down by the Norman conquerors of England soon after 1066; a massive Norman cathedral begun about 1090, in ruins by the 15th Century; and the present structure founded in 1499. The new cathedral was completed just a few years before the Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry VIII in 1539.

Founded first as a convent, it later became a successful monastery. King Edgar began a revival of the abbey on his accession in 959 A.D., encouraging the monks to adopt the Rule of St. Benedict. He encouraged monks to adopt the Rule of St Benedict. Bath Abbey was reformed under St. Alphege, its Abbot in the 10th Century.
